Followers' Annual Meeting
The main Rupert event of the year is, of course, the Followers Annual Meeting in Warwick in August. This event is open to Followers only and is a huge Rupert-festival of talks, stalls, fun and games. The Origami Society is generally represented and the event is a unique and exciting occasion when Followers can meet, eat, drink and talk about Rupert. They can also acquire unque items such as Followers-only figurines. All events are publicised widely in the Newsletter. If this all sounds intriguing, please click here to join us.
Alfred Bestall Biography
Caroline Bott, Alfred Bestall's god-daughter, published a biography of Alfred in 2003. This "must-have" book includes diary extracts, images from both Alfred's Rupert and non-Rupert work (he illustrated other books and drew for Punch and other quality magazines ... "the shinies"). The book is published by Bloomsbury ... Harry Potter's publishers ... and was launched at the Followers' Annual Meeting on 30th August 2003. It is a fascinating read for Rupert fans, for anyone with an interest in children's literature or simply anyone who likes a lovingly-written biography of a fascinating character. Those of us who already own the book are entranced by Alfred's wartime reminiscences (both wars!), his work as an illustrator and, of course, his long association with Rupert.
Caroline also has a fascinating collection of Alfred Bestall's original artwork that is on show to groups of Followers from time to time - dates will be announced here and in the Newsletter. Alternatively, Caroline is willing to arrange visits by groups of 12 or more interested people (Followers or not) - please 'phone her on 01483 416546 to ask for a date and time or email her for details.
